BUILDINGS, SUGARCUBES

Installation and Design by: Dejana Kabiljo

“…when they came closer, they saw that the little house was built entirely from bread with a roof made of cake, and the windows made of clear sugar. Then a gentle voice called out … and a woman, as old as the hills and leaning on a crutch, came creeping out.”

Hansel and Gretel, Brothers Grimm

This wall made of sugar tackles the issues of growth and greed in the world of real estate and the male predominance in the construction industry.

But what fuels all the muscle power?

Although sweetness is associated with femininity, sugar, the quickest source of energy, is also one of the commodities that drove the brutality of early capitalism.

This project is based on the dream of prosperity but also on the fear and danger behind it, just like a magical fairy tale trying to teach us a lesson.
