MATTERS FROM MURANO AND ZANZIBAR
Installation and Design by: Emmanuel Babled
Two legendary islands… The first, Murano, is home to Europe’s master glassblowers. The second, Zanzibar, is home to skilled craftsmen who create furniture from local natural materials. Emmanuel Babled works with both groups using their traditions and techniques to explore the changing role of the designer. To him, the designer’s role is to research materials and ways of working around the world and to collaborate with local makers. In this way, the designer becomes a bridge between past and present, different worlds, between design and craft. “More than ever, we need to explore sustainable ways of creating, and to share experiences rather than just making stuff. These humble chairs from Zanzibar and these elaborate glass objects from Murano are symbols of this necessary evolution”.
