Having just received his degree in Architecture from the Politecnico of Milan in 1972, he founded and directed the CentroKappa(until 1984), a consulting company in the realm of business communications. During that time (1977), together with Alessandro Mendini, he created the design magazine Modo,and he was art director for five years. In 1979 he won the “Compasso d’oro” and founded the Domus Academy, together with Maria Grazia Mazzocchi and Alessandro Guerriero, the first and most important post-doctorate school of design worldwide (he will become CEO twenty years later from 2001 to 2003).

Between 1984 and 2006, he was partner and CEO of Garage, one of the leading companies in Italy specializing in communications and multimedia events. In the meantime he established and managed Orchestra, one of the leading new media agency in Italy and together with Kartell and Finartemide, Design Italia, the first Internet Portal dedicated to Italian Design.

In April 2004, for 4 years, he was the Art Director of Olivetti, in charge of the design management of new products and the corporate identity, involving several internationally renowned names in the design field such as Ideo (London), James Irvine, Alberto Meda, Jasper Morrison, Francisco Gomez Paz, Marco Zito.

In 2006, he founded Design Library, the first library entirely dedicated to design; he is till today the soul and the cultural director of this project. Among its scheduled appointments, “Design Thursdays” have become points of reference in current years for those who, by profession or by passion, gravitate towards the world of design: more than 190 lectures and conferences already conducted, with the participation of the major players in design from all around the world every Thursday.

From 2010 he is consultant in Design Management for design driven companies and design initiatives worldwide. Among these are particularly relevant:

Mosca Partners, of which he is a partner along with Caterina Mosca. The company realizes design projects and events, among these are Bologna Water Design (2011-2014), Urban Stories (2012-2013) and A matter of perception at Palazzo Litta for the Salone del Mobile (from 2015 to date) and Water Design on the occasion of Expo at Castello Sforzesco in Milan (Oct 2015).
In 2017-18 MoscaPartners is a partner of Mibact (Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism) for Palazzo Litta Cultura: an interdisciplinary cultural program to make Palazzo Litta a new cultural center for the city of Milan.

Fondazione Riccardo Catella, since 2005 he is member of the Scientific Committee and President of the Foundation’s Culture, Design and Communication Commission.
