STUDY FOR A SOAP

Emmanuel Tussore

A Matter of Perception: Linking Minds – Palazzo Litta, Corso Magenta 24, Milano

The Aleppo soap was developed in the earliest antiquity by master soap makers in Syria. It embodies hundreds of years of culture and history. An emblem for its eponymous city, the oldest soap in the world is the symbol of refinement and its use is that of the civilised man. Emmanuel Tussore chooses the softness of this fragile and malleable matter to narrate the cruelty of war. Filmed, photographed, set on pedestals composed of monitors, or reclined in packaging in showcases, the carved soap represents many shattered buildings.
